The House of Al Maktoum has steered Dubai since 1833, when Sheikh Maktoum bin Buti led the Bani Yas tribe to establish a new principality along Dubai Creek. What began as a modest trading settlement has become one of the world's most extraordinary cities.

Under H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the 13th ruler of Dubai, the Emirate rose to global prominence. The Emirates airline, the Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, and DP World are among the landmarks of his enduring legacy.

The Founding of Dubai
Sheikh Maktoum bin Buti leads 800 members of the Bani Yas tribe to settle along Dubai Creek, establishing the Al Maktoum dynasty and founding the Emirate of Dubai as an independent principality.
1958
Sheikh Rashid's Transformation
Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum rises to rule, launching Dubai's transformation with Port Rashid, Dubai International Airport, and the Creek dredging project.
1971
The United Arab Emirates
Dubai joins the federation of the United Arab Emirates. The Al Maktoum dynasty takes its place at the heart of the new nation from the very first day.
1985
Emirates Airline Founded
Sheikh Mohammed founds the Emirates airline with a $10 million budget. Today it is one of the world's largest and most celebrated carriers — a symbol of Dubai's bold ambition.
2006
Sheikh Mohammed Ascends
H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum becomes the 13th Ruler of Dubai and is appointed Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE.
2010
Burj Khalifa Opens
The Burj Khalifa — the world's tallest building at 828 metres — opens in Downtown Dubai, a monument to the Al Maktoum family's vision and a defining moment in architectural history.
